Telford MP Calls for Partnership on Toll Road Link

Telford MP David Wright is calling on the Government to speed up the construction of the link between the M54 to the M6 Toll road. Mr Wright has tabled a series of Parliamentary Questions seeking to find out what the coalition Government plans to do to take the project forward and has also written to Midland Expressway Ltd seeking a meeting.

David Wright said:
“The M6 Toll has proved invaluable for thousands of motorists and I would like to see those benefits made easier for Telford’s business community as well as residents. I believe the commitment that the Labour Government gave back in 2006 was an important one and I am now pressing Ministers and the company to make progress on this.

“Originally, the finance for the scheme was to have come from the refinancing of the M6 Toll, and I still believe that Midland Expressway which runs the M6 Toll should foot the bill. I want better access to the national and international road network for Telford, but I don’t believe the taxpayer should pay for this scheme when it is the M6 Toll which will benefit.”

The 2006 announcement committed both the Government and Midland Expressway to a new road from the M54 and Telford to the M6 and the M6 Toll which would not be tolled like the M6 Toll.

The West Midlands Area Multi Modal Study (WMAMMS) recommended the development of a link from the M54 to the M6 Toll to improve access to and from the M54 corridor and Telford. Ministers supported the link road in principle and instructed the Highways Agency to carry out further detailed work with a view to developing proposals for consideration.
